Email to John Cuillo at Scripps Hospital from a patient
Hi Missy and Bob,
I got this email over the weekend that mentions the beautiful piece of art (referred to as the infinity piece) that La Verne and Blaine sponsored in the Emergency Department. La Verne loved that piece!!! 😊
Their presence and generosity is felt everyday around here. But we sure miss them both.
Happy Valentine’s Day!!!
Best,
John C.

Hi John
I am delighted to share my “Emergency Room Experience” and the great power that the ART displayed at Scripps Hospital in the Encinitas Hospital, had on me that night when on January 10th, 2022 I was admitted to the ER. I was sick with a terrible cough, exhaustion, loss of smell, and taste. I decided to go to the Emergency Room at Scripps. Due to Covid, I waited outside in the cold, under heaters, while the nurses and medical staff worked tirelessly to admit patients. Covid tests were sparse but because I have Asthma, they tested me, took chest ex rays, and blood tests. I tested Positive for Covid-19. Miserable, uncomfortable, cold, and obsessed by fear of what this could mean to me with an already compromised condition, I worried…I knew how quickly this virus could turn.
The medical staff was amazing and very much on task. I was in good hands and only needed to trust in the process. Several hours went by until finally, I was informed, given medication, and finally released.
As I emerged from my distress, I walked out of the emergency room and was Immediately struck by the captivating imagery on the walls. I stopped and I stood transfixed in front of an infinity sign (in multi-media.) That image had a powerful impact on me. Not only visually, but the words in the piece gave a message that I felt was somewhat transformative! Then a Docter stopped and asked me if I was okay. I told him “Yes, I’m fine- only absorbed in this powerful art work on the wall.”
He gave a smile of relief and agreed with me that it was powerful and I told him it felt healing and hopeful. I walked through the threshold and just as I approached the automatic door, Ken Goldman’s painting caught my eye. Standing under the cliff at Moonlight beach was a flock of seagulls peacefully hanging out on the shore.
The painting was large and kind of “wrapped it’s arms around me.”…
It reminded me:
be calm,
breath,
this too shall pass!
It was great to find this and other pieces of art. As I was leaving, it helped me to relax. I took it all in and was happy to receive its intrinsic beauty. Wow! I felt truly blessed to be part of a community of people who demonstrate commitment and dedication to helping people. These professionals, both in Medicine and in the Arts, truly serve—they put themselves on the frontline and guide us to wholeness and back to health again—for them, I am truly grateful! The Doctors, Nurses, the Artist, the Staff, the organizers, and all those who care for others- especially when we are just holding on by a thread, are so appreciated!
Cheers!
Nancy
